TOWER BRIDGE - A LONDON ICON May 30 2017
My Vintage Railway Collection is inspired by my love of the classic railway posters of the 20th century. In celebration of our stunning capital city, a recent addition to this collection is my new gouache painting of Tower Bridge - an iconic symbol of historic London.
Tower Bridge was built across the River Thames in 1886-1894 and is crossed by over 40,000 people every day - connecting the London boroughs of Tower Hamlets (north side) to Southwark (south side). A stunning example of Victorian architectural design and engineering, it is a combined suspension and drawbridge - the cantilevered bascules are raised around 1000 times each year to allow river traffic to pass safely under the bridge.
If you’re planning a visit to Tower Bridge and you'd like to learn more about it, I’d warmly recommend a visit to the Tower Bridge Exhibition. This excellent London visitor attraction invites you to ‘step inside the most famous bridge in the world to explore its iconic structure, spectacular views and glass floor, modern exhibitions and magnificent Victorian Engine Rooms’.
